When I heard last spring that the Mayor Cup 2009 would take place in a special edition (Netherlands-America) it seemed to me a great oppotunity to get acquainted with the surfskipaddling. It was also a great introduction to the city of New York.
When I arrived in Manhattan it was still nice weather and the race would probably be paddled under quiet conditions. A few days before the race that the chance that the weather would be somewhat worse turned out, but on the morning of the race it was really clear that the weather conditions were very heavy. It meant waves, incredibly windy and cold.
After a reasonable start for me soon became clear that paddling on the Hudson was not similar to what I had experienced in other races until now. Besides the circumstances it was a great experience to paddle the race with views of the Manhattan skyline. The race results were due to the special circumstances difficult to predict. After a tough battle with myself on the Hudson River I entered the Harlem River in which I could join the experienced Greg Barton. Much of the race I accompanied him in a small group but unfortunately I had to let him go for the last 5 km. He knew with his experience to keep pace during the last 5 km.
For me this was the heaviest race I have ever paddled. I hope it wasn't the last mayor cup.
A great experience where I got to know New York, The New-York people and incredibly friendly people including the organization and the family (Lyn Goldsmith) where I stayed. For paddlers who are considering participating in this contest, let me just say: prepare for everything and whatever it will be a great experience!!!!
